An update on the House attempt to limit online communications, and a note of thanks for your help

Two weeks ago, I posted an urgent note [Array] about the Democrats’ latest attempt to curtail communication between the American people and their elected representatives by applying an archaic House rule limiting Congress’ use of the Internet.

Thousands of you responded to my request to send a message that restricting the dialogue between government and the people would not stand. You signed the petition [1], joined the Facebook group [2], and called or emailed your Representatives, and with each action you helped send that message louder and more clearly.

I am writing you today to tell you that, thanks in large part to your efforts, we can claim victory on this issue, at least temporarily. Speaker Pelosi and the rest of the House Democratic leadership have decided for now to shelve this attempt at controlling the information you receive about what is going on in Congress.

My Texas colleague Rep. John Culberson and I are working with Republican leadership in an effort to bring these House rules up to date, so that they can’t be arbitrarily enforced in the future to prevent the American people from hearing what goes on in the halls of Congress.

We will keep you posted on this issue. Thanks again for your support of open, honest, transparent government.
